Thinking of My Brothers On a Moonlit Night

by Du Fu

The drums of war have
Destroyed all hope for travel
Except now on the verge of autumn
A wild goose cries overhead
Perhaps announcing the arrival
Of the season's first frost

In my distant hometown
I know the moon
Is also shining brightly
But I wonder how far
My brothers have been
Scattered in the darkness

No word from home
Either of life or death
Letters posted
But never received
It's a routine part
Of this war without end
